Comments:
Rhode Island Privateer Brigantine Minerva was a former prize brought into Providence, Rhode Island, the 70-ton Minerva.1 As a privateer, Minerva was commissioned on 7 October 1776 under Commander Joseph Rotch. Her owner was listed as Adam Babcock2 of Boston, Massachusetts.
Babcock was soon busy fitting out the Minerva. On 22 October he received permission from the Connecticut Council of Safety to purchase and export salt beef and two cannon owned by the state.3
1 NDAR, “Interrogation of James Morres, Master of the Prize Brig Minerva,” VI, 1115-1116. In Sheffield, An Address Delivered by William P. Sheffield before the Rhode Island Historical Society, 59, this man seems to be confused with “James Mowry,” whom Sheffield states was in command of the privateer in 1776.
