Comments:

The 90-ton Maryland Privateer Brig Fair American was commissioned on 15 September 1780 under Commander Luke Kiersted1 of Baltimore, Maryland.2 She was listed as having a battery of eight guns and a crew of twenty-six men. Her owners are given as Samuel and Robert Purviance of Baltimore.3 Fair American's $20000 bond was signed by Kiersted and by James Williams of Annapolis, Maryland.4

Although there is no certain further record of this Fair American, it is possible that this brig was the Fair American that was captured at the fall of St. Eustatius, Netherlands West Indies on 3 February 1782. She was said to have “effected much mischief to British commerce,” and was also said to have been taken into the Royal Navy. There is no record of the latter statement.5 This is likely the same Fair American that was libeled in Antigua in 1781.6
