The 90-ton Maryland Privateer Schooner Betsey1 [Betsey and Sally]2 was commissioned on 30 October 1779 under Commander John Nichols3 of Baltimore, Maryland.4 She was listed as having a battery of six guns, with six swivel guns, and a crew of eleven men. Her owners were listed as Henry Nichols, Charles Cruckshanks5 [Crookshanks]6 and Christopher and Robert Johnston of Maryland. The application for the commission was made on 25 September 1779.7 Betsey’s $5000 bond was signed by Nichols and James Tootell of Annapolis, Maryland.8
