HREF="#T000001B"><SUP>1</SUP></A><SUP></SUP> possibly of Baltimore, Maryland.<A NAME="B000002T"></A><A HREF="#T000002B"><SUP>2</SUP></A><SUP></SUP> She was listed as being armed with fourteen guns and having a forty man crew. Her owners are given as John Sterett, Jesse Hollingsworth and others of Baltimore.<A NAME="B000003T"></A><A HREF="#T000003B"><SUP>3</SUP></A><SUP></SUP> Her $20000 bond was executed by Yellott and Charles Wallace of Annapolis, Maryland.<A NAME="B000004T"></A><A HREF="#T000004B"><SUP>4</SUP></A><SUP></SUP></P> <P style="margin:0pt" align=justify><BR></P> <P style="margin-top:0pt; margin-bottom:0pt; width:670px; font-family:Venetian301 Dm BT" align=justify><I>Antelope</I> sailed from Baltimore with the Maryland Privateer Schooner <I>Felicity</I> (probably Commander Frederick Folger) on 19 June 1780. On the afternoon of 27 June, near 28&#176;N, the two privateers met the British Privateer Brig <I>Thomas</I> (Bell), bound from Bermuda<A NAME="B000005T"></A><A HREF="#T000005B"><SUP>5</SUP></A><SUP></SUP> [or New Providence, Bahamas]<A NAME="B000006T"></A><A HREF="#T000006B"><SUP>6</SUP></A><SUP></SUP> to St. Eustatius, British West Indies, with a cargo of cotton, indigo, sarsparilla, lignum vitae and timber. <I>Thomas</I> was a Philadelphia built brig, mounting twelve guns and had a crew of thirty-two men aboard. Her crew had arranged cotton bales along her deck, as high as a man, to make a barricade. There was not the slightest disposition on the part of the British to surrender. Both American privateers attacked and a two hour fight began. Eventually the <I>Thomas</I> struck, but not before inflicting heavy damage on the <I>Antelope</I>, riddling her sails, mainmast and foretopsail yard nearly shot off, squaresail boom damaged, steering sail boom, sail, and yard shot off. <I>Felicity</I> and <I>Antelope</I> hove to and began repairs. The Pennsylvania Privateer Schooner <I>General Scott</I> (Commander William Nichols) joined the Americans. The <I>Thomas</I> was sent off to Philadelphia.<A NAME="B000007T"></A><A HREF="#T000007B"><SUP>7</SUP></A><SUP></SUP> She safely arrived in Philadelphia about 10 July 1780.<A NAME="B000008T"></A><A HREF="#T000008B"><SUP>8</SUP></A><SUP></SUP></P> <P style="margin:0pt" align=justify><BR></P> <P style="margin-top:0pt; margin-bottom:0pt; width:670px; font-family:Venetian301 Dm BT" align=justify><I>Antelope</I> and <I>Felicity</I> proceeded to St. Eustatius. She returned to Baltimore on 21 November 1780, bring accounts of the damage in the West Indies<A NAME="B000010T"></A><A HREF="#T000010B"><SUP>10</SUP></A><SUP></SUP></P> <P style="margin:0pt" align=justify><BR></P> <P style="margin-top:0pt; margin-bottom:0pt; width:670px; font-family:Venetian301 Dm BT" align=justify><I>Antelope</I> was re-commissioned on 19 January 1781 under Commander Frederick Folger<A NAME="B000011T"></A><A HREF="#T000011B"><SUP>11</SUP></A><SUP></SUP> of Annapolis. Peter Wing of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania served aboard as First Mate.<A NAME="B000012T"></A><A HREF="#T000012B"><SUP>12</SUP></A><SUP></SUP> <I>Antelope</I> listed a reduced battery of twelve guns, with two swivels, and a reduced crew of thirty-nine men. She was said to measure 130 tons. They sailed from there en route home. On the way the ship <I>Resolution</I> (Waterburgh), with a cargo of sugar and cotton, was captured. She was bound for Amsterdam, The Netherlands but had been captured by the British. <I>Resolution</I> was ordered in to the Delaware. She was again captured by the British and re-captured by the Americans on her way in. In coming up Chesapeake Bay the two privateers captured the British Privateer Schooner <I>Jack-o-Lanthorn</I>, with six guns and thirty-six<A NAME="B000017T"></A><A HREF="#T000017B"><SUP>17</SUP></A><SUP></SUP> [136]<A NAME="B000018T"></A><A HREF="#T000018B"><SUP>18</SUP></A><SUP></SUP> men, out of New York. She departed Nantes, France about 10 July 1781 and arrived at Baltimore on 15 August 1781, in just thirty-five days from Nantes, France.<A NAME="B000026T"></A><A HREF="#T000026B"><SUP>26</SUP></A><SUP></SUP></P> <P style="margin:0pt" align=justify><BR></P> <P style="margin-top:0pt; margin-bottom:0pt; width:670px; font-family:Venetian301 Dm BT" align=justify><I>Antelope</I>&#8217;s next cruise took her to Havana, Cuba. She sailed from Havana on 1 February 1782 with a French frigate and a Spanish 74-gun battleship. On 9 February the three sighted and chased a small convoy from Jamaica, consisting of five merchant vessels escorted by HM Frigates <I>Proserpine</I> and <I>Ranger</I>. Quick-sailing <I>Antelope</I> outran her consorts and overtook two stragglers: a snow and a brig. At the time of the capture the French frigate and Spanish ship were six miles astern of the <I>Antelope</I> and the British convoy about six miles ahead. The snow was ordered into the Delaware, the prisoners were put on the brig, and she was released. <I>Antelope</I> arrived at Baltimore on 21 February.<A NAME="B000027T"></A><A HREF="#T000027B"><SUP>27</SUP></A><SUP></SUP></P> <P style="margin:0pt" align=justify><BR></P> <P style="margin-top:0pt; margin-bottom:0pt; width:670px; font-family:Venetian301 Dm BT" align=justify>Perhaps dating to this cruise of the <I>Antelope</I> was a rescue at sea. As she was returning home from the West Indies, and in the vicinity of the Gulf Stream, Yellott, encountered the wreck of the brig <I>Buck</I> (Williams), bound out of Richmond, Virginia for St. Kitts. <I>Buck</I> had foundered. After sixty-five hours on the wreck eighteen of her twenty-two men had died before <I>Antelope</I> sighted the wreckage. Williams and three other men were rescued and taken into Baltimore.<A NAME="B000028T"></A><A HREF="#T000028B"><SUP>28</SUP></A><SUP></SUP></P> <P style="margin:0pt" align=justify><BR></P> <P style="margin-top:0pt; margin-bottom:0pt; width:670px; font-family:Venetian301 Dm BT" align=justify><I>Antelope</I> was commissioned a third time on 29 March 1782, under Yellott again. Her battery was again reduced, to ten guns, and her crew was listed as thirty-seven men. She was again stated to measure 130 tons.<A NAME="B000029T"></A><A HREF="#T000029B"><SUP>29</SUP></A><SUP></SUP></P> <P style="margin:0pt" align=justify><BR></P> <P style="margin-top:0pt; margin-bottom:0pt; width:670px; font-family:Venetian301 Dm BT" align=justify>Yellott again took her down to Havana. He sailed from Havana about 5 June 1782.<A NAME="B000030T"></A><A HREF="#T000030B"><SUP>30</SUP></A><SUP></SUP> En route home <I>Antelope</I> met the Maryland Privateer Ship <I>Iris</I> (Commander Thomas Cole).<A NAME="B000031T"></A><A HREF="#T000031B"><SUP>31</SUP></A><SUP></SUP> Not long after the British Privateer Sloop <I>Mohawk</I> (Freeman), armed with ten guns and with a crew of forty-two men was captured. <I>Mohawk</I> had sailed from New York about 1 June. <I>Antelope</I> brought her into Baltimore on 15 June.<A NAME="B000032T"></A><A HREF="#T000032B"><SUP>32</SUP></A><SUP></SUP></P> <P style="margin:0pt" align=justify><BR></P> <P style="margin-top:0pt; margin-bottom:0pt; width:670px; font-family:Venetian301 Dm BT" align=justify>Another cruise to the West Indies followed. <I>Antelope</I> sailed from St. Kitts, [French West Indies] about 1 August 1782. Off the Virginia Capes she was chased by a large ship. <I>Antelope</I> managed to elude her pursuer only by throwing various articles overboard, including her anchors and several of her guns.
