Massachusetts Privateer Ship America was [commissioned on 9 June 1780] under Commander John Somes1 of Newburyport.2
America, under Somes, captured at least three prizes. These were all libeled by Somes on 4 September 1780, with trial set for 3 October 1780 in the Massachusetts Maritime Court of the Middle District. The prizes were the 280-ton ship Eweretia (George Testonby); the 160-ton brigantine Nancy (Andrew Crighton); and the 140-ton snow Beaver (William Roxburgh).3
