The 140-ton1 Massachusetts Privateer Ship America was commissioned on 8 September 1779 under Commander Anthony Shoemaker of Boston, Massachusetts. She was listed as being armed with fourteen guns and as having a crew of forty men. Her $10000 Continental bond and £4000 Massachusetts bond were signed by Shoemaker and by Samuel Broome and Joseph Head of Boston. Her owners were listed as Samuel Broome and others of Boston.2
America was captured by the British in 1779. The High Court of Admiralty records note that she was a re-capture, formerly being the British ship Nancy.3
