The 80-ton Maryland Privateer Brig1 [Brigantine]2 Alexander was commissioned on 18 November 1779 under Commander Thomas Conway3 of Baltimore, Maryland.4 She was owned by John McLure & Co.5 of Baltimore. The commission was dated 25 September 1779.6 Her bond of $5000 was given by owner McLure and Conway.7 She was listed as having a battery of twelve guns and a crew of forty men.8 Alexander was Conway's second privateer command.9


She was re-commissioned on 7 July 1781 with a slightly different name, Alexandria, under Commander John Thomas Boucher, an ex-officer of both the Maryland and Virginia navies. Her battery was given as twelve guns and her crew as forty men. Her owners are listed as John McLure of Baltimore and Robert T. Hooe and others of Alexandria, Virginia.10 The bond of $20000 was given by Boucher (of Alexandria, Virginia), Richard Conway (Baltimore, Maryland) and Robert Adams (also of Baltimore).11
