Comments:
Massachusetts Privateer Sloop Adam's owners, John Winthrop and Stephen Bruce, petitioned the Massachusetts authorities for a commission on 15 July 1776. They were in the process of fitting out the sloop, under Commander George Creighton, for a voyage to Hispaniola to purchase cannon and military stores. The Adam was to be armed there for the return trip and would take on an increased complement to man her guns. The petition was sent to a committee on 16 July, but there is no record of her commission.1
