The 120-ton1 Massachusetts Privateer Brigantine Active was commissioned on 6 May 17802 under Commander Benjamin Ellinwood3 [Ellingwood], of Beverly, Massachusetts.4 She was listed as being armed with ten guns and having a crew of twenty-four men.5 Her Continental bond ($10000) and Massachusetts bond (£4000) were signed by Ellinwood and by Job Prince, Jr. and William Creed (both of Boston).6 Prince and Creed were listed as the owners,7


On 10 July 1780 Active sailed for Göteborg, Sweden from Beverly. Just before sailing a list of the crew was taken, which indicates some of the officers of the vessel. John Hammond (born in Marblehead, but residing in Beverly) was listed as First Mate, and Thomas Butman (of Beverly) was listed as Second Mate.8
